Nepal Floods Highlight Risks of Glacial Lakes in Uttarakhand
IN · Published Aug 28, 2026
Recent floods in Nepal have raised concerns about the vulnerability of glacial lakes in Uttarakhand's Himalayas.
Accelerating glacier melt due to rising global temperatures is increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Impact & Risks

The risk of GLOFs poses a significant threat to downstream communities in Uttarakhand, as demonstrated by the 2013 Kedarnath disaster. Vulnerable lakes could lead to sudden and catastrophic flooding, endangering lives, infrastructure, and ecosystems. Despite budgetary approvals, continuous monitoring of these lakes remains limited, increasing the potential for unanticipated disasters.
