• Uttarakhand has initiated the installation of its first glacial lake early-warning system at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli district.
• The project, which began on 29 September 2026, is being led by a 22-member team from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, with support from the Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee.

Impact & Risks

The installation of this early-warning system is critical for mitigating the risks associated with Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which can cause sudden and catastrophic flooding. Vasundhara Tal is one of 13 high-risk glacial lakes identified in Uttarakhand, out of 344 lakes mapped by the National Remote Sensing Centre in 2023. The system aims to provide timely alerts to protect lives and infrastructure in downstream areas. GLOFs, often triggered by the failure of moraine or ice dams, pose significant risks to communities and ecosystems in the Himalayan region.
