• The government of Uttarakhand has installed its first glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) early warning system at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli district.
• This system, equipped with advanced weather sensors, is part of the Rs 150-crore National Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Risk Mitigation Project.

Impact & Risks

The installation of the GLOF early warning system is expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods in Uttarakhand. The state has a history of devastating natural disasters, such as the 2013 Kedarnath floods, which claimed over 6,000 lives. Chamoli district, where the system is installed, has been particularly vulnerable, with incidents like the 2021 glacier burst and avalanche. The system will provide critical early warnings, potentially saving lives and minimising damage to infrastructure in high-risk areas.
