IN · Published Sep 18, 2026
A recent assessment by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has projected a sharp increase in the number of warm nights across nine districts of Uttarakhand between 2025 and
Chamoli is expected to be the most affected, with an average of 52 warm nights annually, up from 18 in the 1982–2024 period. Other districts, including Tehri Garhwal, Champawat, Almora, and Dehradun, are also expected to see significant increases. The study also highlights a rise in summer humidity, with relative humidity increasing by up to 16% between 2012 and 2022 compared to the 1982–2011 baseline.

Impact & Risks

The rise in warm nights poses serious ecological and public health risks. Warmer nights can disrupt the natural recovery process of the human body from daytime heat, increasing vulnerability to heat-related illnesses. Additionally, the ecological balance of the hilly regions may be affected, potentially impacting agriculture and biodiversity. Chamoli is also expected to experience an increase in extremely hot days, from 19 to 26 annually, further compounding the risks.
