Cryosphere Hazards in the Himalaya: Rising Risks and Cascading Impacts
Cryosphere Hazards in the Himalaya: Rising Risks and Cascading Impacts
IN · Published Oct 23, 2026
• The Himalaya is experiencing significant environmental changes due to rising temperatures, retreating glaciers, degrading permafrost, and altered precipitation patterns.
• These changes are increasing the likelihood of cryosphere-related hazards such as rock and ice avalanches, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), glacier detachments, and extreme floods.

Impact & Risks

Cryosphere-related hazards pose severe risks to mountain communities, infrastructure, and downstream regions. The Chamoli disaster claimed over 200 lives and destroyed hydropower projects, while the South Lhonak flood in Sikkim affected settlements and infrastructure along a 64 km stretch, resulting in over 170 fatalities. Transboundary impacts, such as those affecting Bangladesh, further underscore the widespread consequences of these events. Vulnerable areas like Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir face risks from sudden floods, threatening agriculture, hydropower, and livelihoods. Scientific assessments reveal increasing susceptibility of glacial lakes, with thousands of buildings, bridges, and roads at risk.
