A severe heatwave has taken hold across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal norms.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a yellow alert for heatwave conditions is in effect for the entire week, with no rain or thunderstorms expected.
Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 42°C (107.6°F) on Monday, surpassing last May's high of 41.7°C (107.1°F).

Why It's Important?

The ongoing heatwave poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke. Agricultural activities and outdoor labor are likely to be severely impacted, and the dry conditions may increase the risk of wildfires in some areas. Urban centers like Chandigarh, with high population density, may experience additional strain on water and electricity resources.
