The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the Chandigarh Tricity region on Sunday, 13th September 2026, as heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning lashed Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula.
The rainfall began around 1 pm and continued into the afternoon, varying in intensity across different areas.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall caused significant waterlogging in low-lying areas of the Tricity, disrupting traffic and inconveniencing residents. The storm-water drainage system struggled to cope with the accumulated water, leading to flooding on several stretches. The intense rain and accompanying lightning posed risks to public safety, particularly in areas prone to flooding. The rainfall is expected to help reduce Chandigarh's seasonal rainfall deficit, which stood at 18.4% below normal as of Saturday, but the immediate impact has been challenging for residents.
