Rainfall to Ease in North India, Heavy Rain Predicted in South
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the southwest monsoon's withdrawal has progressed up to Chandigarh, leading to dry weather conditions across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Punjab starting 29 September
• Meanwhile, active weather systems are expected to sustain rainfall activity in southern and northeastern India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated locations in southern India, while the Northeast and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to experience continued showers. Uttarakhand, which recently saw rainfall and snowfall in higher elevations, is expected to see improved weather conditions, with only light to moderate rain anticipated in districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh.
Impact & Risks
The easing of rainfall in northwestern India will bring relief to regions like Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab, which are expected to experience dry conditions. However, heavy rainfall in southern India could lead to localised flooding or waterlogging in vulnerable areas. The Northeast and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may also face disruptions due to persistent showers. Uttarakhand's improvement in weather conditions will likely reduce risks of landslides and flooding in the affected districts.
