An extreme heat warning has been issued for coastal and some inland counties in South Carolina, effective August 18, according to the National Weather Service. Heat advisories are also in place for many inland areas and are expected to persist through August
Temperatures are reaching the mid- to upper-90s (35-37°C), with some areas hitting 100°F (37.8°C). The heat index, which accounts for humidity, is making it feel even hotter, ranging from 113°F to 119°F (45-48°C) in areas under the extreme heat warning, and 108°F to 112°F (42-44°C) in regions with heat advisories. The heat is impacting daily life, including school transportation and outdoor activities, as Charleston schools reported issues with air-conditioning on some buses, and the city canceled outdoor sports practices on August 17 and 18.

Impact & Risks

The extreme heat poses significant risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The heat is also disrupting daily activities, with schools and sports practices being affected. Construction workers and others who work outdoors are at heightened risk of heat-related complications. Residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe during this period of intense heat.
