A powerful microburst struck the Charlottesville area on the evening of August 14, 2026, causing significant damage to trees and powerlines, particularly in the Greenbrier and Locust Grove neighborhoods.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm originated as a cluster of storms over Rockingham County, which intensified into a supercell before weakening and then strengthening again near Charlottesville.

Impact & Risks

The microburst caused widespread damage to trees, powerlines, and local infrastructure, particularly in the Greenbrier and Locust Grove neighborhoods. The storm's wind gusts were comparable to those of EF0 and EF1 tornadoes, posing risks to residents and property. Hail of 2.5 inches in diameter also contributed to the damage. Cleanup operations are underway, but lingering debris and damaged areas may still pose hazards to residents and visitors.
