Wildfire Smoke Prompts Air Quality Alert in Washington
US · Published Aug 21, 2026
An Air Quality Alert has been issued for 33 cities across central and northeastern Washington due to wildfire smoke, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The affected areas include Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Grant, and Okanogan Counties.

Impact & Risks

The wildfire smoke is expected to significantly impact air quality in the affected regions, posing health risks to residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly. Prolonged exposure to unhealthy air can lead to respiratory irritation and exacerbate pre-existing health conditions. Downwind areas are particularly vulnerable as smoke continues to spread. Residents in cities like Winthrop, Twisp, and Entiat are experiencing some of the highest AQI levels in the state, making outdoor activities potentially hazardous.
