IN · Published Oct 22, 2026
• A low-pressure area has formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal as of 5:30 am on 21 October 2026, under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation.
• This system is causing heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with Chennai and surrounding areas already experiencing significant downpours.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall has already caused waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupted daily life in Chennai. Schools in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts have been closed as a precaution. There is a risk of further flooding, especially in urban areas, and potential damage to infrastructure due to strong winds and lightning. Agricultural activities in affected districts may also face disruptions.
