IIT-Madras Develops Coastal Vulnerability Maps for Chennai and Karaikal
IN · Published Sep 17, 2026
Researchers at IIT-Madras have unveiled Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) maps for Chennai and Karaikal, aimed at identifying areas susceptible to climate-related hazards such as sea-level rise and storm surges.
The initiative is part of a broader climate-risk assessment supported by the Department of Science and Technology.

Impact & Risks

The findings highlight the vulnerability of critical coastal infrastructure in Chennai and Karaikal, including ports, fishing harbours, power plants, and transport networks. Increased intensity and frequency of coastal hazards due to climate change pose risks to millions of livelihoods and essential infrastructure. The research aims to improve flood management, protect groundwater resources, and support sustainable coastal development. Vulnerable areas identified through CVI maps can help policymakers prioritise adaptation strategies and disaster preparedness.
