IN · Published Oct 25, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by 26 October
• Rainfall warnings have been issued for multiple districts, including Nilgiris, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Chennai, with isolated areas likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall. Winds of 40–50 km/h are also forecast in some regions. The system is predicted to move west-northwestwards and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast by 28 October 2026.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall is expected to cause waterlogging in urban areas, particularly in Chennai, and may lead to flooding in low-lying regions. The Nilgiris district is at risk of landslides due to intense rainfall, especially in hilly areas like Coonoor. Coastal areas and fishermen are advised to exercise caution as strong winds and rough seas are anticipated over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system could disrupt transportation and daily activities in affected districts.
