• Chennai experienced heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon intensified over Tamil Nadu, leading to significant waterlogging and traffic congestion across the city.
• North Chennai was particularly affected, recording rainfall between 6 cm and 10 cm in less than an hour, which overwhelmed the drainage system.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall has caused widespread waterlogging, disrupting daily activities and travel in Chennai, especially in low-lying areas with poor drainage. Traffic delays have been reported across the city, and residential neighbourhoods in North Chennai are among the worst affected. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu, warning of continued heavy rainfall until 23 October, with very heavy showers expected until 21 October. The situation may worsen if rainfall persists, increasing the risk of flooding and further disruptions.
