IN · Published Oct 20, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast, is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.
• This system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Ramanathapuram.

Impact & Risks

The anticipated heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and potential flooding in low-lying areas. Strong winds accompanying the rain may cause damage to trees and weak structures. Residents in the affected areas, particularly in Chennai and coastal districts, should remain cautious of potential hazards such as lightning and electrical disruptions.
