• The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a forecast for heavy rain in isolated areas of Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts on 1 October
• Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is also expected in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The weather in Chennai and its suburbs will remain partly cloudy today, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely during the evening and night. The maximum temperature in Chennai is expected to range between 36-37°C, while the minimum temperature will be around 27-28°C. The forecast brings hope for relief from the ongoing heatwave affecting several districts in Tamil Nadu, exacerbated by the El Niño effect.

Impact & Risks

The forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms may provide much-needed relief from the scorching heat in Tamil Nadu, particularly in districts like Nilgiris and Coimbatore. However, the gusty winds accompanying the rain could pose risks such as falling branches or minor structural damage. The ongoing heatwave has been particularly severe in Western Ghats districts like Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Theni, and Coimbatore, where residents are eagerly awaiting rainfall. The weather conditions may also impact daily activities, especially during the evening and night in Chennai and other affected areas.
