Tamil Nadu braces for heavy rainfall; schools closed in five districts
IN · Published Oct 21, 2026
• Heavy rainfall has been reported across Tamil Nadu, with schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts closed on October 21,
• The IMD has attributed the rain to a likely low-pressure area forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast. Rainfall measurements in Chennai include 12 cm at Meenambakkam and 11 cm at Nungambakkam, with other areas recording between 8 cm and 10 cm. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast continued heavy rainfall until October 26.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging in several areas, particularly in Chennai, where ongoing Metro Rail works have exacerbated the issue. Disruptions to daily life, including transportation and school schedules, are expected. Residents in low-lying areas face increased risks of flooding and stagnant water, which may lead to health and safety concerns.
