• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple rainfall alerts for Tamil Nadu due to the interaction between a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea and a developing cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal.
• Chennai and its neighbouring districts, including Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur, are under a yellow alert for heavy rain (6-12 cm in 24 hours) on Sunday.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruptions in daily life, particularly in Chennai and surrounding districts. The red alert areas along the Western Ghats may experience significant impacts, including potential landslides and damage to infrastructure. The ongoing rainfall has already resulted in above-normal precipitation in Chennai (278.8 mm, 69% above normal) and other districts like Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram. Residents in affected areas should remain cautious, especially during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
