Yellow Alert Issued for Chennai as Heavy Rainfall Continues Across Tamil Nadu
IN · Published Oct 19, 2026
• The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for Chennai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from 19th to 21st October
• The ongoing northeast monsoon has intensified, bringing thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 km/h. While the red alert for Chennai has been downgraded to a yellow alert due to the weakening of a cyclonic circulation over the West-Central Bay of Bengal, heavy rainfall is still expected in several districts, including Tiruchy, Coimbatore, and the Nilgiris. The highest rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours was 363.4 mm at Parrys in Chennai. The current spell of rain is expected to persist across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until 24th October.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall has already caused waterlogging in several areas of Chennai, particularly in flood-prone neighbourhoods. The risk of further flooding remains high as the rain continues. Districts such as Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, and Theni are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could disrupt daily life and transportation. Residents in these areas are advised to remain cautious and avoid waterlogged zones.
