IN · Published Oct 19, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until October 24, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in isolated locations.
• The Regional Meteorological Centre attributes the rainfall to an active cyclonic circulation over northern Tamil Nadu and southern coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Impact & Risks

Heavy rainfall has caused significant waterlogging in low-lying areas of Chennai, including Ennore, Tiruvottiyur, and Manali, as well as central business districts like Broadway and Parry’s Corner. Localised water levels have reached up to 30 cm in some areas, disrupting daily life and increasing the risk of flooding. The ongoing weather conditions may lead to further disruptions in transportation, damage to infrastructure, and heightened risks for residents in vulnerable areas.
