• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Chennai and neighbouring districts, forecasting heavy rainfall of 6-12 cm within 24 hours starting Friday, 23 October
• This weather event is linked to a low-pressure area that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and has moved to the Comorin region and adjoining parts of southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The associated cyclonic circulation, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, is contributing to the formation of rain-bearing clouds. The IMD predicts moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai, with maximum temperatures likely to remain at 31-32°C and minimum temperatures at 25-26°C.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall is expected to impact daily life in Chennai and surrounding districts, including Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, and Kancheepuram. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for districts along the Western Ghats from 23 to 26 October, indicating heavy to very heavy rain. Risks include waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and potential flooding in low-lying areas. Residents in affected regions should remain cautious, especially during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
