• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.
• This development is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Ramanathapuram, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

Impact & Risks

The forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruption to daily activities in the affected districts. Urban areas, including Chennai, may experience traffic congestion and potential damage to infrastructure due to water accumulation. Agricultural activities in regions like Thanjavur and Nagapattinam could be impacted, with the possibility of crop damage due to excessive rainfall. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to remain vigilant as the risk of flooding increases.
