The Chesapeake Bay is experiencing a rise in Vibrio vulnificus infections, a bacterium often referred to as 'flesh-eating bacteria.' This increase is attributed to climate change, which has warmed the Bay's waters by 1.8°F (1°C) over the past 30 years, according to NOAA.
Vibrio thrives in warm, brackish waters with salinity levels between 10 and 20 parts per 1,000, conditions increasingly met in the Bay.

The rise in Vibrio infections poses risks to public health, particularly for individuals with open wounds or weakened immune systems. V. vulnificus can cause severe complications, including sepsis and tissue necrosis, and has a high mortality rate. The economic impact is also significant, with healthcare costs and lost income from V. vulnificus infections estimated at $238 million annually. Oyster farmers face additional challenges as Vibrio contamination threatens consumer confidence in seafood safety. The warming waters of the Chesapeake Bay, coupled with nutrient pollution, create an ideal environment for Vibrio proliferation, increasing risks for both residents and visitors.
