Chicago Ranks 2nd Worst for Mosquitoes in 2026 Amid Climate Concerns
US · Published May 19, 2026
Chicago has been ranked the second-worst city in the United States for mosquito activity, according to a report by Orkin Pest Control Service.
The ranking, based on residential mosquito treatments performed between March 2025 and March 2026, places Chicago just behind Los Angeles and ahead of New York.
Experts suggest that climate change is playing a significant role in expanding the range of mosquito species, including those carrying diseases like West Nile virus and yellow fever.

Why It's Important?

The primary concern for Chicago residents is the potential spread of mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus. While the current risk level for human infection in Cook County is labeled as low, this could change as the season progresses. Urban habitats, such as polluted storm drains, provide ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, making them more resilient. Additionally, the expanding range of invasive species due to climate change poses a growing public health challenge. Despite these risks, local mosquito control efforts and public health programs are mitigating the immediate threat, and no West Nile virus has been detected in recent mosquito testing.
