US · Published Aug 18, 2026
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a 'marginal' risk of severe weather for the Chicago area on Tuesday, August 18,
This level one out of five risk highlights the potential for scattered thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes noted that most of the day will remain dry and partly sunny, with rain chances increasing after 5 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts the greatest storm coverage will occur in northeast Illinois through midnight, while other areas may remain dry. Temperatures are expected to reach the 80s during the day, cooling into the 70s by Wednesday as a cold front moves through.

Impact & Risks

The primary concerns include heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding in some areas and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Northeast Illinois is expected to experience the most significant storm activity, which could disrupt evening plans and pose localized flooding risks. While the storms are forecast to be scattered, the potential for severe weather warrants caution, especially for those in flood-prone areas. Northwest Indiana residents may face additional challenges as power outages persist from last week's derecho.
