Air Quality Alerts Issued for California, Illinois, and Indiana Due to Pollution
US · Published May 27, 2026
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued air quality alerts for parts of California, Illinois, and Indiana, urging millions of residents to limit driving and outdoor activities.
In Illinois and Indiana, ground-level ozone, a key component of smog, is the primary concern, exacerbated by hot, stagnant weather and light winds.
In California's desert regions, windblown dust is the main issue, with strong winds lifting soil and sand into the air.

Why It's Important?

The poor air quality poses serious health risks, especially for children, older adults, and those with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions. Ground-level ozone can irritate the lungs, trigger asthma attacks, and worsen chronic respiratory diseases. Particulate pollution from dust can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of heart disease and other severe health issues. Outdoor workers and individuals engaging in physical activities outdoors are also at heightened risk.
