Thunderstorms with High Winds and Hail Expected in Chicago Area

• The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a forecast for possible thunderstorms in the Chicago area on Tuesday, June 16,
• These storms are expected to bring winds of up to 60 mph and hail as large as half-dollars. Affected areas include north-central and northeast Illinois, as well as northwest Indiana. Counties at risk in Illinois include Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kendall, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, Ford, and Cook, among others. In Indiana, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton counties are also under slight risk. Current conditions at O’Hare and Midway airports are mostly cloudy with temperatures at 69°F (21°C).

Why It's Important?

The storms pose a risk of damaging winds and hail, which could impact property and outdoor activities. On Wednesday, a cold front is expected to trigger additional severe thunderstorms, particularly near or south of I-80 and into northwest Indiana. These storms could bring winds up to 80 mph, golf-ball-sized hail, and torrential rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding. Dangerous conditions are also anticipated at Lake Michigan beaches on Wednesday and Thursday.
