Summer Watering Tips for Plants in Chicago

As summer approaches, gardeners in Chicago are advised to prepare for the hot and dry conditions typical of July and August.
According to Sharon Yiesla, a plant knowledge specialist at The Morton Arboretum, plants require consistent watering to thrive, especially during variable weather patterns that may include heat waves and droughts.

Why It's Important?

The primary risk during summer is insufficient watering, which can lead to plant stress, reduced growth, and even plant death. New plants, which lack extensive root systems, are particularly vulnerable. Container plants are also at risk of drying out quickly due to limited soil volume. Overwatering or watering at inappropriate times, such as midday, can waste water and fail to meet plants' needs. Additionally, standing water on leaves overnight can promote fungal diseases. Gardeners must remain vigilant and adapt their watering practices to changing weather conditions to mitigate these risks.
