The Chicago locks, which manage the flow between the Chicago River system and Lake Michigan, are occasionally opened during extreme rain events to prevent flooding in the city’s downtown area, known as the Loop.
This action, however, comes with significant consequences, as it results in the discharge of untreated sewage and stormwater into Lake Michigan, the city’s primary source of drinking water.

Opening the Chicago locks temporarily contaminates Lake Michigan with combined sewer overflow, which includes untreated sewage and stormwater. This poses a short-term risk to water quality and public health, leading to immediate beach closures across Chicago. While the dilution effect of the lake minimizes long-term impacts, the event highlights the vulnerability of the city’s water management system during extreme weather. Additionally, the locks are critical in preventing invasive species, such as Asian carp, from entering the Great Lakes. Permanently opening or removing the locks would exacerbate these ecological risks and create significant challenges for stormwater management in the region.
