Chicago Issues Air Quality Alert Due to Elevated Ozone Levels
US · Published May 27, 2026
An air quality alert has been issued for the greater Chicago metropolitan area, impacting nearly 9.4 million residents.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that ozone pollution levels are expected to reach the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' category on the Air Quality Index (AQI) over the next two days.
This alert, in effect through Wednesday night, advises individuals with respiratory conditions, children, and older adults to limit prolonged outdoor activities.

Why It's Important?

The primary risk is to sensitive groups, including individuals with asthma, chronic respiratory conditions, children, and older adults. Exposure to elevated ozone levels can exacerbate respiratory issues, leading to symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, and difficulty breathing. Prolonged exposure may also increase the risk of long-term health complications. Residents in affected areas are advised to take precautions to minimize exposure, particularly during peak pollution hours.
