Heat Wave and High Humidity to Impact Eastern U.S. Ahead of July Fourth
US · Published Jun 29, 2026
A significant heat wave is set to impact a large portion of the eastern United States this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Temperatures are expected to rise significantly, with highs reaching into the 90s and low 100s °F (32-38 °C) and heat indices climbing to 100-115 °F (37-46 °C) due to high humidity.

Impact & Risks

The heat wave poses significant risks, particularly for those without access to air conditioning. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses, especially as nighttime temperatures remain elevated. Urban areas, where temperatures may not dip below 80 °F (27 °C), are at heightened risk. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are especially susceptible. The heat index, which accounts for humidity, will make outdoor activities and strenuous work dangerous during peak hours.
