US · Published Jun 29, 2026
An intense and prolonged heat wave is set to impact the central and eastern United States in the days leading up to Independence Day.
According to NBC News, temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s and 100s °F (32-38 °C), with humidity pushing heat index values to dangerous levels of 105-114 °F (40-46 °C).

Impact & Risks

The heat wave poses significant risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity increases the likelihood of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Urban areas, where temperatures tend to be higher due to the heat island effect, are especially at risk. Outdoor workers, athletes, and individuals without access to air conditioning are also highly vulnerable. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions as the heat intensifies.
