• The Northeast monsoon has intensified over Tamil Nadu, with a low-pressure area persisting over Comorin and adjoining south Tamil Nadu. This has resulted in heavy to very heavy rainfall across southern, interior, and Western Ghats districts. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, warning of intense rainfall until October
• Notably, Ezhudesam in Kanniyakumari district recorded 15 cm of rainfall in the past 24 hours ending 8:30 a.m. on October 22,

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of flooding in low-lying areas and increased water levels in rivers such as Moyar, Bhavani, and Noyyal. Reservoirs, including Pechiparai and Papanasam, may see higher inflows. Districts like Kanniyakumari, the Nilgiris, and Coimbatore are particularly vulnerable, with isolated very heavy rainfall and squally winds of up to 50 km/h expected. The rainfall could disrupt daily life, including transportation and agricultural activities, in the affected regions.
