Delaware Air Quality Forecast: Moderate Levels Expected
US · Published Aug 28, 2026
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has released updated air quality forecasts for the state. On Friday, August 28, 2026, partly cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms are expected to limit ozone production, while calm northerly winds may hinder pollutant dispersion. AQI levels are forecasted to be low-Moderate for PM2.5 and high-Good for ozone. Saturday will see light to moderate northeasterly winds aiding dispersion, but partly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper-80s will favor ozone formation, resulting in low-Moderate AQI for ozone and high-Good for PM2.
By Sunday, southerly winds will bring regional pollutants into Delaware, with increasing sunshine and temperatures in the upper-80s promoting ozone production. AQI levels are anticipated to be mid-Moderate for ozone and low-Moderate for PM2.

Impact & Risks

Moderate air quality levels may pose health risks to sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Ground-level ozone can irritate lung tissue, potentially causing breathing difficulties during strenuous outdoor activities. While air quality is generally acceptable for the general public, those unusually sensitive to air pollution should take precautions. The forecasted moderate AQI levels for PM2.5 and ozone suggest that air pollution may temporarily affect outdoor activities, particularly during peak afternoon hours when ozone production is highest.
