Humidity Rises Across Northwest India Ahead of Monsoon Withdrawal
• Humidity levels have increased across northwest India as the southwest monsoon approaches its withdrawal phase, expected around 19 September
• Regions such as Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi are experiencing warm and humid conditions, despite moderate temperatures. Delhi recorded a temperature of 28°C, with a maximum of 32°C expected. Air quality in the region remains poor, with AQI levels ranging from 99 to 234, the highest being at Anand Vihar. Experts attribute the discomfort to a combination of high moisture, weak winds, and urban heat effects. Rainfall is forecast in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand until 22 September.

The increased humidity and poor air quality are causing discomfort, particularly in urban areas like Delhi. High moisture levels combined with weak winds are trapping pollutants closer to the ground, exacerbating air quality issues. Urbanisation and warm nights are further intensifying the oppressive conditions. While rainfall is expected in some hilly regions, the overall reduction in monsoon activity may limit relief from the heat and humidity.
