Heavy Rains Disrupt Flights and Daily Life in Delhi-NCR
• Heavy monsoon rains caused significant disruptions across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday, 24 August
• The downpour led to waterlogging in multiple areas, including Munirka, Connaught Place, and Sangam Vihar, leaving commuters stranded. At Indira Gandhi International Airport, 15 flights, including three international ones, were diverted to cities like Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Lucknow. Road traffic was severely affected, with long jams reported on major routes. Rainfall measurements varied across the region, with Safdarjung recording 34.6 mm, Janakpuri 70 mm, and Gurugram 38 mm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for parts of Delhi, warning of more heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.

Waterlogging caused traffic congestion, accidents, and damage to infrastructure, including a building collapse in Old Delhi. In Gurugram, the drainage system was overwhelmed, prompting authorities to advise work-from-home arrangements. The IMD warned of risks such as power outages, accidents, and structural damage, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall. Schoolchildren and commuters faced significant challenges navigating flooded streets, with some vehicles abandoned due to water damage.
