Delhi's air quality has plunged into the 'severe' category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 468 as of August 16,
The primary pollutant, PM2.5, has reached a concentration of 216 µg/m³, significantly exceeding safe levels. This marks one of the worst air quality days in the city this year. The situation is attributed to stagnant weather conditions and high emissions from vehicular traffic, industrial activities, and construction dust. Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to limit outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours.

Impact & Risks

The severe air quality poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Prolonged exposure can lead to respiratory distress, reduced lung function, and aggravation of asthma. The general population may also experience irritation in the eyes, throat, and nose. Outdoor activities are strongly discouraged as the pollution levels are hazardous to health.
