Rain and Thunderstorms Bring Temporary Relief to Delhi Amid Heatwave
IN · Published May 24, 2026
Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced a welcome respite from scorching heat as rain and thunderstorms swept through the area on the morning of May 23,
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this relief was due to thunderstorm activity over northwest India. Wind speeds during the storms reached up to 81 km/h at Pusa Road, 56 km/h at Palam, and 35 km/h at Pragati Maidan. Visibility at Palam airport dropped significantly, from 3,500 meters to 1,500 meters within an hour. Despite this temporary relief, temperatures in Delhi had been hovering above 43°C (109°F) the previous day, with Safdarjung recording a maximum of 43.3°C (109.9°F). The IMD has forecast a return of heatwave conditions in the coming days.

Why It's Important?

The thunderstorms and rain provided a brief break from the intense heat, but the relief is expected to be short-lived. Heatwave conditions are predicted to persist in Delhi until May 28, with temperatures potentially rising to 45°C (113°F). The IMD has also issued an alert for heatwave conditions, which can pose health risks such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Reduced visibility during the storms may have also impacted transportation and air travel in the region.
