Delhi-NCR invokes GRAP Stage-I as AQI rises to 244

• The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR after the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi rose sharply from 179 on 20 October to 244 by 2 pm on 21 October
• This increase pushed the air quality from the 'moderate' to the 'poor' category. Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) suggest that air quality is likely to remain poor in the coming days. The CAQM has directed all concerned agencies to implement measures under Stage-I of GRAP immediately to prevent further deterioration of air quality.

Impact & Risks

The poor air quality poses health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Outdoor activities may exacerbate health issues due to increased exposure to pollutants. The restrictions under GRAP Stage-I aim to mitigate these risks by controlling pollution sources, including construction activities, vehicular emissions, and waste burning. However, the situation may worsen if additional measures are not implemented or if weather conditions further limit pollutant dispersion.
