Monsoon Delayed in Delhi Amid El Nino and Weather Anomalies
IN · Published Jun 30, 2026
The southwest monsoon, which typically arrives in Delhi by June 27, has been delayed this year due to a combination of factors, including the absence of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and the influence of El Nino conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the monsoon trough remains pinned to the south, while dry desert winds from Pakistan and West Asia dominate the region.

Impact & Risks

The delay in monsoon onset has led to prolonged heatwave conditions in Delhi, with temperatures soaring above seasonal averages. The minimum temperature on June 27 was recorded at 31.1°C, the highest in two years, while the maximum reached 41.8°C. The heat index, or 'feels-like' temperature, has been reported as high as 50.7°C, causing significant discomfort to residents. The delay has also contributed to a 42% rainfall deficit across the country, raising concerns about water scarcity and agricultural impacts.
