• Delhi's air quality worsened on Wednesday morning, with the city-level Air Quality Index (AQI) rising to 228 at 7 am, categorised as 'poor', according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
• Of the city's 59 air quality monitoring stations, 33 recorded AQI readings above 200, while two stations—Vivek Vihar and Jahangirpuri—registered 'very poor' levels at 316 and 305, respectively.

Impact & Risks

The 'poor' air quality in Delhi is expected to cause breathing discomfort for most individuals, especially on prolonged exposure. The 'very poor' AQI levels recorded at Vivek Vihar and Jahangirpuri could lead to respiratory illnesses for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Elevated pollution levels in neighbouring cities such as Noida and Greater Noida also pose health risks. PM2.5 particles, the primary pollutant, can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially causing long-term respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
