• The remnants of Hurricane Polo, a former Category 5 hurricane, are set to impact Colorado this week, intensifying the state’s monsoon season.
• The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for much of southern and south-central Colorado starting Tuesday, with some areas expected to receive up to 3 inches (76 mm) of rain.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses a significant flood risk, particularly in low-lying areas, regions with burn scars, and areas with larger streams. The San Juan Mountains and the Aspen Acres burn area are under moderate to high flood threats. While the rain may provide some relief to drought-stricken areas, excessive rainfall on dry ground could lead to flash flooding rather than alleviating drought conditions. The western portions of Colorado, which are most affected by drought, are expected to see less precipitation.
