Cloudburst and High-Altitude Hazards in Uttarakhand's Dharali Village
Cloudburst and High-Altitude Hazards in Uttarakhand's Dharali Village
IN · Published Oct 24, 2026
• A significant weather event occurred in Dharali, Uttarkashi, on 5 August 2025, where a debris flow down the Kheer Ganga buried much of the village located on the Gangotri route.
• Initially attributed to a cloudburst, scientists are investigating other potential causes, including a glacier collapse, a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), or a landslide.

Impact & Risks

The debris flow in Dharali caused extensive damage to the village, highlighting the vulnerability of settlements in high-altitude regions. The Central Himalayas, including Uttarakhand, are particularly prone to such hazards due to steep gorges, dense pilgrimage traffic, and the interaction of monsoon and western disturbances. These factors, combined with the region's fragile ecosystem, increase the risk of cloudbursts, landslides, and GLOFs. Such events can lead to loss of life, destruction of property, and disruption of essential services, especially in remote and densely populated areas.
