• Europe experienced its hottest summer in 2026, marked by repeated heatwaves that began unusually early in spring.
• According to Copernicus, the EU's climate monitor, 52% of the continent faced 'very strong' heat stress, with temperatures feeling hotter than 38°C.

Impact & Risks

The intense heat stress affected over half of Europe, overwhelming natural cooling systems and causing symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, organ failure, and death. It was the leading cause of weather-related mortality globally in 2026. Drought conditions disrupted freight transport, irrigation, nuclear reactor cooling, and hydropower generation. Almost half of Europe was affected by drought by the end of August, highlighting the increasing severity of dry conditions over the past 45 years.
