A recent analysis by property data and analytics firm Cotality has identified the top 15 U.S. states most at risk of hurricane damage in
Florida and Texas lead the list, with Florida having over 8.2 million homes at moderate or greater risk, representing a reconstruction cost value of $2.3 trillion. Texas follows with 4.76 million homes at risk and a reconstruction cost value of $1.5 trillion. The report highlights that while hurricanes are more frequent in the Gulf Coast region, the densely populated and high-value properties in the Northeast make it particularly vulnerable to devastating impacts. New York City, for instance, surpasses any Florida city in terms of reconstruction cost value, with over $1.9 billion at stake. Nationwide, more than 32.2 million homes are at risk of hurricane wind damage, with a total reconstruction cost value exceeding $12.26 trillion.

Why It's Important?

The report underscores the significant risks posed by hurricanes to both the Gulf Coast and the Northeast. Florida and Texas are the most vulnerable states, with millions of homes at risk and reconstruction costs in the trillions. However, the Northeast, including New York, faces unique challenges due to its high population density and property values. A single hurricane could result in catastrophic financial and infrastructural damage in these areas. Homeowners in these regions are urged to remain vigilant and prepared, as the stakes are particularly high during hurricane season.
