Post-Flood Risks Persist for Weeks After Water Recedes in Ganga
IN · Published Sep 7, 2026
The Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have highlighted ongoing risks following the receding water levels of the Ganga River.
Even after the floodwaters subside, embankments and nearby areas remain vulnerable to damage for up to 3-4 weeks.

Impact & Risks

Post-flood conditions pose significant risks to affected communities, including infrastructure damage, water contamination, and health hazards. Embankments and roads near the Ganga River are particularly vulnerable to collapse, which could disrupt transportation and relief efforts. The accumulation of silt and debris may hinder recovery operations, while stagnant water increases the risk of waterborne diseases. Vulnerable populations, including those in relief shelters, are at heightened risk during this period.
