Northwest Indiana is grappling with widespread power outages over a week after severe storms struck the region. The storms, which brought winds of up to 99 mph (159 km/h), caused extensive damage, including the destruction of 300 utility poles and 44 power transmission poles. As of Wednesday afternoon, approximately 75,000 customers remain without electricity, with the hardest-hit area being Lake County, particularly Gary, Indiana. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) has deployed over 600 linemen to restore power, but full restoration in Gary is not expected until August
The storm initially left 300,000 customers in the dark, and the prolonged outages have left residents struggling with spoiled food, lack of air conditioning, and other challenges. The storm has also claimed seven lives since it began on August 11.

Impact & Risks

The ongoing power outages are severely affecting residents in northwest Indiana, particularly in Gary, a majority-Black city. Many are facing financial burdens due to spoiled food and the high cost of running generators. Vulnerable populations, including those relying on refrigerated medications like insulin, are at heightened risk. The outages have also led to frustration among residents, with some feeling overlooked in the recovery efforts. The storm's impact has been widespread, with fatalities reported and significant infrastructure damage, making the restoration process complex and time-consuming.
