• A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) occurred at Sintaphu Lake in Bhutan on 29 October 2026, washing away the Gasa Tshachu hot spring complex and damaging a section of the Punakha-Gasa highway.
• The floodwaters, carrying debris, have disrupted connectivity and prompted precautionary evacuations in Bhutan.

Impact & Risks

The GLOF has caused significant damage in Bhutan, including the destruction of infrastructure and disruption of transportation. In India, the rising water levels in the Sankosh River pose a risk to communities in West Bengal and Assam. Floodwaters may carry debris, including rocks and mud, potentially damaging property and endangering lives. While no casualties have been reported, the situation remains critical, with local authorities on high alert.
