Bhutan Glacial Lake Outburst Triggers Flood Alert in Assam and Bengal
BT · Published Oct 30, 2026
• A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) occurred at Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan's Gasa district on 29 October 2026, releasing a significant volume of water downstream through the Mo Chhu river system.
• This event has raised concerns about climate-linked disasters in the Himalayan region, particularly in downstream areas of India.

Impact & Risks

The flood poses risks to communities and infrastructure in Assam and West Bengal, particularly in areas near the Sankosh River, which connects to Bhutan's Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu river systems before joining the Brahmaputra. A sudden rise in water levels could lead to damage to roads, bridges, and buildings, as well as potential displacement of residents. The Indian Himalayan region, with its thousands of glaciers and glacial lakes, remains highly vulnerable to such events, especially as climate change accelerates glacier retreat and increases the size and number of glacial lakes.
